Information about Prague
The capital of the Czech Republic is also the largest city of the country. Located in the middle of the Central Europe, Prague the capital of the historic region of Bohemia for centuries and of the Holy Roman Empire, it means the place the city had in the European history.
Almost undamaged by WWII, Prague has a medieval centre which remains a wonderful mixture of cobbled lanes, walled courtyards, Cathedrals and countless church spires all in the shadow of her majestic 9th century castle that looks eastward as the sun sets behind her.
By the Vltava river the city is called the one thousand bell tower city due to its many religious building. Also a modern and vibrant, full of energy, of music, and of cultural art, Prague is regarded by many as one of European most charming and beautiful cities. With Budapest and Krakow, Prague has become the most popular travel destination in Central Europe.
When I came in Prague I was wishing two things quite incompatibles. Discovering the wonderful city of Prague with its Old Town preserved from the WWII, and take rest. Originally I should sleep one night and leave for Lodz in the next afternoon, to this end I prepared my come with Jan, a good friend of my Erasmus in Tallinn. He doesn’t live in the capital but knew who can offer us a flat for days.
Get in Prague
I came in the city around noon by car after have left Stuttgart and bought « driving Visa » to be allow to drive on Czech highways. The city was crowded and the circulation signs doesn’t help me to find my way to the Rodulfinum car park. Because my friend wasn’t able to meet me before the evening I start my exploration by myself, without notes, without maps or any idea of what should I see. I also didn’t search information about Prague city, that is to say that I was extremely happy and surprised when I walk for the first time in these small streets by this shiny Tuesday.
Town Hall tower
I managed to get a city map and start my long walk. I start by going on the top of the Town Hall Tower and try to localize all the main places not so far from the Old Town square. Moreover it said the view is great from the top, actually.. it is 🙂 I continue my visit by going on he Charles Bridge, from it the river Vltava is much more impressive than from the side. I saw so many people on it, it seems to be the main tourists place with countless outdoor artists and sellers, Asian wedding and so on. Good atmosphere came from that place. After crossed the bridge and see the Lesser Town Bridge Tower I came back to Old Town, passing under the Old Town Bridge Tower.
Meet my Erasmus buddy
We arranged meeting at Namesti Republiky metro station, next to the Powder Tower in the evening. I decide from now to follow this almost local. We went to specials pubs called Beer Museum and then Ambiente Lokal. The first one provides something like twenty different draft beers, and the second have a very nice interior, very sober, almost empty. We tried some beers and local meal and talk about the program of the next day.
Before his friends came, those who will give us accommodation for the night, we decided to spend one day more in Prague. Instead of two short days it became two long days! Perfect. He convinced me, even if it was not difficult, to stay longer and to show me some places which aren’t in the Old Town. The day finish by another walk to the car to take luggage and go to the flat.
Prague Castle and Petrin Hill
The next day, after have gone to shop we walk tough the Jewish district, the Old Town. The afternoon he lead me to the Prague Castle where we saw the changing of the guard. But first, to reach the Castle which on the hill, you should walk countless stairs. Exhausted. After have took photos with guards, we go into the castle and see the Vitus Cathedral. We would like to check the Golden Lane, according to my friend it should be free, once there it was not for free and we decide to miss it. Right after we had left the Castle area we moved to the Petrin Hill.
On this hill stands a tower which look like the Eiffel Tower. We been inside and saw the city from his top. Despite the tower is lower than its French cousin, once on the top you are higher, the hill helping a lot 😉
We return in the city passing by Mala Strana and the Charles Bridge where we made some photoshoot. Close to the Old Town Bridge Tower is a museum. I noticed it during my first walk. The Museum of Medieval Torture Instruments, I don’t need to say how special it is.
Chilling for my last night
My experience in Prague finish by a night in a pool pub with billard game and beers. We have fun there despite we lost one hour in some district I don’t know to find a pool hall.
