Not enough time for Vilnius

0

Christmas spent in France, travelling through Vilnius, I had for those holidays two chance to see my second favourite city. As in Tallinn the Lithuanian capital didn’t received snow and I dealt with cold rain and broken shoes.

Maybe late but I came

Cold and early morning

I left Estonian under the rain in the evening travelling with bus until Lithuania. There the sky was cloudy but luckily clement. I immediate felt cold after having left the bus and tried to find a place to stay for couple of time. No need to say that in the morning before 8am everything is closed but Mc Donalds. On my way I noticed technician preparing the 3D light show on the Cathedral and wanted to make some photo of that empty square enlighten. It was after having unpacked my camera and tripod from my bag that I faced a non enjoyable fact: camera stay switched on the whole way. My first moment in Vilnius and I had no battery! I took me some hours sitting in the fast food first and then in a café before reaching the 50% level.

Walking like during the good time

At the café my friend met me to share a hot drink before leading to a new park. Opened during the late summer, it was under renovation the previous times I approached it. We walk through it and I saw how nicely the garden were drawn as well as the five new fountains, that it more that in the rest of the city.

Once I left my bag at the hostel we continued our tour in the city, I am happy to not have forgotten it and still feeling to be a local there! She tried to introduce me to the new bus system. A reform appeared and many line changed, either changed or deleted, also some new express ones appears, which in my case was a good thing to go quicker to Pasilaiciu and later to airport.

Early morning and morning walk

The next day went faster, having a flight in the beginning of the afternoon I couldn’t explore so much of what I wanted. I sat in a restaurant with a male friend from my previous semester in Tallinn and we had lunch together before going for a walk. I enjoyed my pink soup as never. One of the things I really miss from Lithuania.

Searching the Flame of Hope

With him we started to find some cool spots to search, I suggested on very hard to get monument. The Flame of Hope, located in a courtyard in the Vilnius Ghetto is not very known, even by local. So we look at the street and at the possible entrance, despite having with me explanation from internet from some American dude, we didn’t make it and stayed outside.

Coming back

I spent only four days in France, during which I met Santa representative and had a good trip to Rouen the capital of Normandy. In contrary with before I didn’t book a night in Vilnius, the city was simply a stop on my way to Tallinn. A short day but not a boring one.

I first got to the coach station to leave there my luggage, they took it for a very low price and the only detail I didn’t really like was that they close quite early, maybe 19:00 when I had my bus at 22:00. Meaning I would have to carry it for at least three hours before my departure.

I was walking from the train station when I had the need to see the chapel of Dawn which is very unique in its design decoration. All the walls are covered by metal stamped details such eyes, arms and hearts. Even with the little light coming by the large windows all the room was shining. I for the very first time enjoyed taking photos with my old Minolta 50mm newly repaired by myself!

I met again with my male friend and we have been to the (also) newly renovated Lower Castle, head of the Lithuanian power for years.I cannot say why but it remember me a lot of the Bratislava Castle from the inner courtyard, probably due to its large classic white walls. Inside the building is now a museum and I saw it is possible to visit the ruins of the original castle under the new one. Instead of visiting it we walked to the Gedimino Tower up the hill. I got there one of my best photo ever of the tower at night with a bit of the old town (I set it has article cover).

The day finish by attending the 3D Christmas show and a dinner in Italian restaurant. The show was not especially good, comparing it with the first time I attended it in 2011 is kind of rude. No magic and not history related theme. Movie was for children only. Pitty. I will be attending in at the end of 2014 and see if it will be improved 🙂
