Didn’t find the sun in Stockholm

0

I always thought that when the sky was grey in Tallinn it was blue in Stockholm. I can now say that it works also in the opposite way, a perfect sky over Estonia means a shitty one over Sweden. But the ESN cruise was awesome, as it as always been!

ESN Sea Battle

Again and again… it is for me the main event of each semester and I have reasons to love it! Thousand students alone on a boat from Tallinn to Stockholm and coming back to Tallinn, a lot of event organized and a good mood spread everywhere by the Erasmus students from all the Nordic countries: it can’t be missed! Being active member of my local ESN I proposed myself to participate to the organisation but I haven’t been chosen, then I registered as a student. It doesn’t make many changes, I just pay and don’t need to bother myself with organisation, somehow I am free to do whatever I want on the boat! Youhou!

Discovering the ferry and first night

I went to the harbour alone and had some panic about being late or not, my trolleybus seemed slow to me, but it appears that I arrived before the organizers. Organizers who made the tickets distribution worse than the previous semester.. people couldn’t hear their name, making lines so close that students had to fight to reach his ticket… But at the end everybody got their pass on time and even some other problem have been solved.

We all got in the boat and started to search for our room, if finding the floor is easy, it is not the same song to find where the rooms are. Mine was actually really close to the stairs and to the entrance, I couldn’t got lost then! For some people it took more time. I find a group of friends and stayed with them, visiting the boat, going to the shop and having drinks before the party.

The first night is for us a good one because a buffet is prepared for all Baltic students, unlimited food and drink: no need to tell that we all got full and sleepy! After our royal meal we continued the party in a cabin. I remember (because yes, seems I don’t remember everything) that I have met several students from Vilnius to who I was organizing a huge pub crawl when they visited Tallinn few weeks before. I haven’t tried the disco that night despite I went to see how it was going. Instead I went to take a nape, but I woke up after and decided to walk in the corridors to see people… I probably met some because I have no memories now, but I kept a tattoo on my leg (but I still think it had been made when I was already sleeping in my room, by one of my cabin-mate, probably the Spanish one, it’s always the Spanish..).

Visiting Stockholm and its subway

A short night and I have been woke up by the captain’s announcement (all rooms have speakers). The two persons with who I shared the room stay in the bed because their night was longer than mine. I took a shower, prepare my camera and walk outside to see some friends. Jackpot I will stay with them the whole day. A proof that I was in a rush is that I forgot my Smiley Ball in the cabin… First time we were separated :(

With my Hungarian friend Zsuzsie we were the only one to have been in Stockholm before. We were supposed to show everything to the rest of the group, helping by a map. It didn’t really went how I thought. Trip start by getting « lost » in the Swedish metro, girls wanted to see all the wonderful station of the metro and we tried to see some of them. I agree that the metro station are nice there, but probably not worth to spend almost an hour in the underground.

Old town: the best area in the city?

Morning continued with a walk from the city centre to the old town island its Royal Palace were we attended the change of the guards. It was not really impressive but I noticed that a woman was giving the instructions to the group of men, Sweden is a progressive country. Once the short parade done I brought the group in the heart of Stockholm. We haven’t met so many people and I was a little upset that the sky kept being cloudy. In my souvenirs going to Sweden means to go to the sun! Anyway it was not rainy.

The old town center is actually pretty, not very big, and not especially animated: streets are full of souvenir shop, every door is a place for spending your money. Some of my friends find good stuffs to bring back to Estonia! Not everything is bad :)

We later stopped in a café for getting warm, I got a cappuccino which looked like a bad coffee but the place was ok, didn’t had to complain about. I started few minute after we left it, while I was buying a postcard with Zsuzsie all the group disappear! Impossible to see them in the street nor to call them… she had souvenir that some wanted to check a previous shop and we started searching for it. If I wasn’t really optimist about, they came inside it after 10 minutes.

Riddarholmen island

After having walk a lot in the streets of the capital we moved to the surroundings to see the sea. We had some troubles to decide where to go but I convinced them to check the old church in which the are buried the monarchs of Sweden. Nothing changed since last semester, the square is still nice and the statue of Birger Jarl keeps watching the tourists.

Royal gardens and Royal Theatre

We walked slowly, but I have seen some new things such the Royal Gardens and its fountain. The best thing was a monument of Charles XIII and its four big lions! I had a photo-shoot with it 😉 The square is really close to the red church of Saint Jackob and of a restaurant named « Milano« ! Thinking I was one week before in this city during my trip to Italy made me smile :)

We already split the group and had to think about how to come back to the harbour but it wasn’t my main problem at that time: I was severely hungry! I saw one McDonalds and told to the girls to have a tour without me, that I will soon find them… It was without considering that Swedish fast food should be called slow food! I waited for 10 minutes to get my meal, which was the most common Big Mac… Rrrr… I found the them in front of the Royal Theatre, large white building with golden element which looks classy from far as from close. I didn’t had time to enjoy it due to the time. We got in the first station we met and reach the harbour early. At least we didn’t had to wait in the queue as it used to be.

Second night on the crazy ferry

The boat had 700 students when it came to Stockholm and it had nearly two thousands when it left the city! Scandinavian people are a lot! What did it change? Almost everything, the corridors were all full of happy girls and boys, the clubs were not empty, the shop was impossible to reach… yes it was notable that something radically changed!

I had again a predink party after have got my Sea Battle Tshirt. And I want to say something about it: why it was so ugly? Compare to the previous it seems to have been made the night before with Word! I can’t believe ESN Sweden cannot find a good designer for it!

The rest of the night was as always, walking from a room to another and meeting new people, I haven’t made new friends, but had fun :) I remember again a French from Vilnius who shared his vodka with me… that bitch gave me a lot! couldn’t even took it in one shot! I went to sleep very late after having enjoy the disco and some more rooms.

Arriving to Estonia

Tuesday morning the ferry arrived in Tallinn, it meant the end of the trip. I walk to the old town and took my trolley, not for going home but to go to class! And yes, I had important meeting for our semester project this day. I entered the class with my bag, my camera around my neck and some more tattoos on the arms.. I real tourist 😀
